- Reginald Musgrave was a former college acquaintance of Sherlock Holmes (MUSG 47).
- He was the owner of "Hurlstone", his family's ancestral estate in western Sussex. He descended from one of the oldest families in England — his branch separated from the northern Musgraves in the 16th century (MUSG 50).
- One of his ancestors was Sir Ralph Musgrave (MUSG 360).
- He was a man of an exceedingly aristocratic type, thin, high-nosed, and large-eyed, with languid and yet courtly manners (MUSG 49).
- He asked Sherlock Holmes to investigate the mystery of the Musgrave Ritual and the disappearance of his butler Richard Brunton and the maid Rachel Howells (MUSG 58).
