In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • He was the owner of "Hurlstone", his family's ancestral estate in western Sussex. He descended from one of the oldest families in England — his branch separated from the northern Musgraves in the 16th century (MUSG 50).
  • He was a man of an exceedingly aristocratic type, thin, high-nosed, and large-eyed, with languid and yet courtly manners (MUSG 49).
