From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

Fictional character.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- He was formerly a young schoolmaster out of place when first employed by Reginald Musgrave's father (MUSG 72).
- He was a well-grown, handsome man, with a splendid forehead, and a man of great energy and character, and he soon became quite invaluable in the household (MUSG 73). With his personal advantages and his extraordinary gifts, he could speak several languages and play nearly every musical instrument (MUSG 74).
- Employed at Hurlstone for about twenty years and around forty years old at the time of the events (MUSG 73).
- Described by Reginald Musgrave as a bit of a Don Juan because of his tendency to charm and pursue women (MUSG 77).
- Formerly married, later widowed; engaged to Rachel Howells before breaking it off for Janet Tregellis (MUSG 79).
- Caught by Reginald Musgrave secretly studying the family document known as the Musgrave Ritual late at night in the library (MUSG 90), and dismissed from service (given a week's notice) after being discovered, but disappeared before leaving (MUSG 103).
- He was found dead in the hidden chamber beneath the cellar — presumably trapped there after attempting to retrieve the hidden Stuart crown (MUSG 292).
