• Colonel Ross was the owner of the racehorse Silver Blaze (black cap, red jacket) competing in the Wessex Cup (SILV 475).

• He hired Sherlock Holmes to investigate Silver Blaze disappearance, and the murder of his trainer John Straker (SILV 30).
