In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Silver Blaze was trained for the Wessex Cup and wore a black cap and red jacket (SILV 475).
  • It killed its trainer John Straker when Straker attempted to lame him so he could profit from betting against the horse (SILV 573), after the killing Silver Blaze fled randomly to a competitor's stable (Capleton stables) (SILV 395).
  • By reasoning and following tracks, Sherlock Holmes found Silver Blaze and the horse could compete and won the Wessex Cup, with a good six lengths before its rival (SILV 504).
