Columbine is a stock character in the commedia dell'arte. She is Harlequin's mistress, a comic servant playing the tricky slave type, and love interest of Pierrot.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Constable John Rance said to Sherlock Holmes that Jefferson Hope was singing about "Columbine's New-fangled Banner", mishearing the "Columbia Star-Spangled Banner" (USA national anthem) (STUD 787).
