In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Jefferson Hope was an American betrothed to Lucy Ferrier (STUD 1772).
- When Lucy was forced to marry Enoch J. Drebber (STUD 2187) and died within a month (STUD 2204), Jefferson devoted his life to vengeance.
- He chased Drebber for twenty years (STUD 2309) and murdered Drebber and his accomplice Joseph Stangerson in London, which started the Study in Scarlet affair.
- Sherlock Holmes decoyed Hope to his apartment and arrested him (STUD 1428).
Description
- He was a powerfully-built man; and his dark, sun-burned face bore an expression of determination and energy which was as formidable as his personal strength (STUD 2258).
