In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Cyril Overton, of Trinity College, Cambridge, was an enormous young man, sixteen stone of solid bone and muscle (MISS 16).
- He was rugby first reserve for England against Wales, and he skippered the 'Varsity all the year.' (MISS 46).
- He visited Sherlock Holmes at Baker Street on the advice of Inspector Stanley Hopkins because Godfrey Staunton, the irreplaceable three quarter of the rugby team, was missing on the eve of a major match against Oxford (MISS 19).
- Godfrey Staunton was his best man (MISS 57).
