In the Sherlock Holmes stories
They were two Hugo Baskerville at two different times :
- Hugo Baskerville (1647) : the infamous ancestor in the family legend (Chapter 2), described as "a most wild, profane, and godless man," (HOUN 190) and found with "a great, black beast... standing over him" (HOUN 219).
- Hugo Baskerville (1742) : a later descendant who authored the family manuscript that recounts the legend (Chapter 2). The document is identified as "Early eighteenth century," and is signed: "This from Hugo Baskerville to his sons Rodger and John" (HOUN 227).
