  • Jack Stapleton, of Merripit House, was a naturalist (HOUN 247). He was once a schoolmaster in the North of England (HOUN 2862).
  • He was small, slim, clean-shaven, prim-faced man, flaxen-haired and lean-jawed, between thirty and forty years of age, dressed in a grey suit and wearing a straw hat (HOUN 1403).
  • He died in the Grimpen Mire — his body was never recovered, and he is presumed swallowed by the bog (HOUN 3633).
