aka Jack Stapleton (false name during the case).
- Jack Stapleton, of Merripit House, was a naturalist (HOUN 247). He was once a schoolmaster in the North of England (HOUN 2862).
- He was small, slim, clean-shaven, prim-faced man, flaxen-haired and lean-jawed, between thirty and forty years of age, dressed in a grey suit and wearing a straw hat (HOUN 1403).
- He lived with his sister Beryl Stapleton, but she was in reality his wife (HOUN 2843).
- He was in reality Rodger Baskerville, the son of Rodger Baskerville, brother of Sir Charles Baskerville (HOUN 3669).
- He murdered Sir Charles Baskerville (HOUN 3712), and attempted to kill Sir Henry Baskerville using a hound (HOUN 3782), in order to inherit the Baskerville fortune (HOUN 3677).
- He died in the Grimpen Mire — his body was never recovered, and he is presumed swallowed by the bog (HOUN 3633).
