- He was a close friend of Dr. James Mortimer, who brought the case to Sherlock Holmes (HOUN 168).
- He was found dead near the yew alley at Baskerville Hall, seemingly of a heart attack, with hints of a giant hound (HOUN 254).
- His estate and title passed to Sir Henry Baskerville, making Henry the next target (HOUN 977).
