  • James Winter aka "Killer Evans" was the criminal who pretended to be "Mr. John Garrideb, Counsellor at Law" (3GAR 365).
  • Sherlock Holmes mentioned him as "of sinister and murderous reputation" (3GAR 356), and in Scotland Yard's records, Holmes found him under multiple names: "James Winter, alias Morecroft, alias Killer Evans" (3GAR 364).
  • He was native of Chicago. Known to have shot three men in the States (3GAR 369). He came to London in 1893 (3GAR 372).
  • He shot a man in London in January 1895, and the dead man was identified as Rodger Prescott, famous as forger and coiner in Chicago (3GAR 373). A very dangerous man, usually carried arms and was prepared to use them (3GAR 378).
