In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Leonardo was the strong man of Ronder's circus, and lover of Eugenia Ronder, the veiled lodger (VEIL 229).
- He helped plan the death of Mr. Ronder with Eugenia Ronder (VEIL 239).
- When the lion bursted out after Mr. Ronder was strucked, Eugenia Ronder said Leonardo could have saved her but panicked and fled (VEIL 255).
- Later, Eugenia Ronder reported that he died recently: "He was drowned last month when bathing near Margate" (VEIL 285).
