In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Silas Brown was the trainer at the rival Capleton stables, which belong to Lord Backwater (SILV 389).
- Sherlock Holmes described him as a more perfect compound of the bully, coward and sneak (SILV 389).
- On the morning after John Straker's death, Silas Brown discovered Silver Blaze wandering loose on the moor. Realizing the horse could beat his own entry, Desborough, he hid Silver Blaze at Capleton to keep him from racing (SILV 394).
- After Sherlock Holmes investigated, Silas Brown accepted to keep Silver Blaze safe and return him in time for the Wessex Cup, fearing exposure (SILV 368).
