In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Sir James Walter was the famed Government expert and official guardian of the Bruce-Partington plans (BRUC 195). He was one of only two with a safe key (BRUC 197).
  • He had grown grey in the service, was a gentleman, a favoured guest in the most exalted houses, and above all a man whose patriotism was beyond suspicion (BRUC 196).
  • He left Woolwich for London about 3 p.m. Monday (BRUC 198), and died the next morning, because the scandal of the theft broke his heart (BRUC 376).
