- Dr. Watson had on his notes the case of the papers of the ex-President Murillo (NORW 13).

- Don Juan Murillo, a bloodthirsty tyrant who lead a reign of terror in Central America, known as The Tiger of San Pedro (WIST 754). He was overthrown, but somehow managed to escape to Europe, as Mr. Henderson (WIST 678).
- The relatives of his former victims, including Aloysius Garcia and Miss Burnet (whose real name is Señora Durando) have tracked him down for revenge (WIST 679).
- Miss Burnet got herself hired as governess at Murillo's house in order to be able to inform the others about his doings (WIST 708). Aloysius Garcia was supposed to come to enact the revenge, but Murillo discovered the plot, held Miss Burnet prisoner, and killed the young man (WIST 715).
