A Study in Scarlet (1887)
- Jefferson Hope was an American betrothed to Lucy Ferrier. (1771)
- When Lucy was forced to marry Enoch J. Drebber (2186) and died within a month (2203), Jefferson devoted his life to vengeance.
- He chased Drebber for twenty years (2308) and murdered Drebber and his accomplice Joseph Stangerson in London, which started the Study in Scarlet affair.
- Sherlock Holmes decoyed Hope to his apartment and arrested him. (1427)
