First Match.
On Monday, 17 August, on the grounds behind the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, people saw the ordinary Sunday crowds, which can be observed at cricket matches. Eerste wedstrijd.
Maandag, 17 Augustus, zag men op het terrein achter het Rijksmuseum te Amsterdam de gewone Zondagsche drukte, die bij het spelen van de cricketwedstrijden valt waar te nemen. De trappen van het Paviljoen waren bezet met cricketers in flanel en in het zwart, terwijl het 12-tal Engelsche spelers, onder aanvoering van den hier te lande welbekenden Sharman, in het veld stond. Mr. Webber, de waardige "manager", stond umpire, daar een van het gezelschap, dat 13 in getal is, noodzakelijkerwijze niet mede kon doen. De andere scheidsrechter was de heer D. v. d. Berg, die altijd groote liefde heeft gekoesterd voor het ondankbaarste aller baantjes. Vóór het relaas van den wedstrijd aan te vangen zij nog gezegd, dat Rood en Wit een sterk 12-tal in het veld bracht, daar het over de diensten van Posthuma en de Haas mocht beschikken en tevens Bentley een handje liet helpen. Rood en Wit ging eerst aan bat en opende het vuur met Posthuma en Hoeffelman welke heeren komen te staan over Lamb, een slow bowler met een vervaarlijken aanloop, en Hatt, een medium pace bowler (round the wicket) met een tamelijk lastige delivery. (Dit zijn wel wat al te veel Engelsche woorden achter elkaar). Posthuma is spoedig uit door over een soort yorker heen te slaan, doch Hoeffelman blijft met Oldenboom eenige overs aan bat. Alleen Menten brengt eenig leven in de brouwerij, door een paar flinke slagen van 3. De laatste was een klap in het longfield, die over den bijzonder ver staanden long-on ging. Bentley verdween bij den eersten bal dien hij kreeg. Hij speelde vooruit op een slow, maar de bal bleef in de handen van den mid-on zitten. Bentley vond het niet aardig dat zijn oude vriend Sharman, dien hij in geen vier jaren had gezien, hem zoo dadelijk uitving. Salomons slaat met scheeve bat over een gewonen bal en zoodoende zijn er 9 wickets down voor 29: een magere score. Wilkens is er echter ook nog en hij en Mulier brengen de score tot 47, eer hij door Hatt wordt gebowld. Wilkens maakte eenige harde slagen en bracht op eens leven in de innings, die bijzonder vervelend dreigde te worden. Hij maakte een geweldigen slag van 4, die dicht bij den ingang van het terrein op den grond kwam zeker ruim 4 waard was Mulier maakte verscheidene singles naar leg en van Maanen slaat den bal een paar malen in de lucht buiten bereik van de fielders, zoodat het laatste wicket ook nog wat runs oplevert. De innings sluit ten slotte voor 55, een vrij wat grooter totaal dan men in het eerst zou vermoeden.
Na geluncht te hebben, gingen de Engelschen aan bat. Harrison, de baardige wicketkeeper, en Richmond worden het eerst naar de wickets gezonden, terwijl het bowlen, gelijk ook niemand anders verwacht had, aan Posthuma en Bentley wordt toevertrouwd.
Harrison wordt spoedig in de slips gevangen en zijn opvolger Neilson door een handigen worp van Menten uitgegooid. De gevreesde vreesde Sharman doet ook niet veel kwaad, daar hij spoedig door de Haas op slip wordt gevangen (3 for 8). Richmond had gedurende dien tijd verscheidene singles, meest naar leg gemaakt doch scoort daarop eenige tweeën, waaronder eenpaar prachtige cuts op Bentley. Posthuma wisselt zijn harde ballen nu en dan af met slows met off effect, die de bewondering van de achter hem gezeten Engelschen wekken. Richmond wordt door een zoodanigen bal geheel in de war gebracht en clean gebowld. Hij had 18 runs in onberispelijken stijl gemaakt. Van de overige batsmen doet alleen Ilatt iets: hij speelt in lossen stijl en maakte verscheidene flinke slagen, waareen onder een van 6 naar squareleg op Posthuma. De fielder kon den bal niet spoedig vinden, doch de slag was zeer fraai en zeker 4 waard. Daar verschillende batsmen spoedig na elkaar verdwijnen, wordt het een interessante quaestie, of de score van Rood en Wit door de Engelschen zal worden overschreden. Er zijn nog 6 runs noodig als Dvvyer, de laatste man, inkomt. Doodsche stilte heerscht alom, als Posthuma op Dwyer staat te keilen. De batsman houdt het echter en maakt een run op hem, wat door zijne vrienden met gejuich wordt begroet. Hatt maakt er ook een en komt zoodoende over Bentley. Bij den derden bal van diens over doet een prachtige bal de bails van Platt's wicket vliegen, hetgeen een groote geest-drift doet ontstaan. Bentley werd van alle kanten toegejuicht, en er heerschte groote vreugde over het feit dat de Engelschen 3 runs op de eerste innings achter zijn.
Het is jammer voor Rood en Wit dat er nog drie uren voor de borst zijn, hetgeen de kans op overwinning zeer verkleint.
De Rambling Brittons nemen de zaak dan ook nogal kalm op en gaan gewoon hun gang. Door onvoorzichtig loopen wordt Hoeffelman uitgerund, terwijl Posthuma bij den eersten bal op slip wordt gevangen en alzoo zijn tweede nulletje scoort. Oldenboom wordt door een shooter van Mariette gebowld. Daar dezelfde bowler in snelle opvolging de wickets van Menten en Meijer neemt, zijn er 5 wickets down voor 9 runs. Hoewel het niet slecht gaat voor de Brittons, komt er toch een verandering in het bowlen. Sharman tracht met lobs de batsmen te verschalken, doch hij komt slecht van de reis, want de Haas en Bentley scoren 9 runs in 2 overs op hem. Bently begon juist op streek te geraken, toen hij prachtig op mid-off werd gevangen van een harden slag. Neilson ving den bal met éen hand boven zijn hoofd, alsof 't hem niet de minste moeite kostte. Wilkens krijgt thans maar éen bal, die zijn bails afwerpt, doch de Haas en Koolhoven zijn bijzonder taai en blijven lang aan bat, hoewel zij weinig rtins maken. Nadat zij uit zijn, maakt Salomons nog wat runs, tot eindelijk de innings wordt gesloten door een fraaien vang op midd-off. Doyle ving den vrij hard geslagen slagen bal laag bij den grond, wat niet gemakkelijk is voor een zoo corpulent man.
Rood en Wit had voor de 29 runs verbazend lang tijd gehad, zoodat het bijna ruim half vijf was toen de Engelschen voor de tweede maal aan bat gingen. Harrison wordt spoedig uitgerund en had aldus een pair of spectacles. Neilson heeft dezelfde twijfelachtige eer, daar een fraaie bal van Posthuma zijn legstump doet tuimelen vóór hij scoorde. Richmond en Sharman brengen de score tol 13, op welk punt eerstgenoemde werd gebowld voor een goede 11. Daar de tijd duchtig begint op te schieten spelen Sharman en Doyle in meer lossen stijl en het heeft er allen schijn van alsof zij de benoodigde runs zullen maken zonder gescheiden te worden. Er waren 33 punten noodig om te winnen, doch Sharman lijdt schipbreuk in het gezicht van de haven, daar hij met de score op 32 door De Haas wordt gebowld. Plet is dan 7 minuten voor half zes, den afgesproken tijd om te stoppen.
Twee minuten later vervliegt de laatste hoop van R. en W. in rook, want Doyle maakt de winning hit, een single naar leg, zoodat de Rambling Brittons een zeer interessanten wedstrijd winnen met 7 wickets, juist een paar minuten vóór time.
Richmond en Sharman speelden het fraaist. Hatt maakte flinke slagen, doch speelde niet zoo in goeden stijl als de beide eerstgenoemde heeren. De Haas speelde verreweg de beste innings voor R. en W. De score van Wilkens was echter ook verdienstelijk, al maakte hij zijn runs niet op fraaie manier.
Hatt en Mariette bowlden het best voor de Brittons. Laatstgenoemde bowlde zeer zuiver op het wicket en had in de 2de innings de prachtige analyse van 10 wickets voor 10 runs.
Het bowlen van Bentley en Posthuma was zoo goed als men verwachten kon. Posthuma nam vele wickets met te ver gepitchte ballen, vooral in de eerste innings. Bentley bowlde veel minder in de tweede innings, toen hij aanhoudend scheen uit te glijden. De Haas bowlde slechts drie overs, die zeer goed waren.
Op het fielden was beiderzijds geen aanmerking te maken. De Engelschen hadden in Harrison een zeer goeden wicketkeeper; hij stond vlak achter het wicket, iets wat men in den laatsten tijd geheel ontwend is.
