In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Effie was first married to John Hebron, an African American lawyer in Atlanta (YELL 410), with whom she had a daughter, Lucy Hebron (YELL 413).
- After her husband died of yellow fever and her child survived, Effie returned to England (YELL 122). She then married Grant Munro (YELL 104).
- Despite Sherlock Holmes efforts to solve the case, it's Effie herself who explained his mysterious visits to the cottage : fearing that her husband Grant Munro might reject her because Lucy Hebron is visibly of mixed race, she kept the child's existence a secret and arranged for her to live in a nearby cottage with a nurse (YELL 423).
