In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Emilia Lucca, born Emilia Barelli, was the daughter of Augusto Barelli (REDC 507).
- She was from Posilippo, near Naples (REDC 507). She married Gennaro Lucca who was in her father's employment (REDC 509).
- Her father forbade the match with Gennaro Lucca, prompting their elopement to marry in Bari (south Italy) and fled to America, in New York (REDC 509). Four years later, they fled the Red Circle and went to London (REDC 567).
- She was the mysterious lodger hidden by Mrs. Warren (REDC 462). Sherlock Holmes discovered a woman has replaced the original tenant, communicating by printed slips and receiving coded Italian light-signals ("Attenta, Pericolo") (REDC 265).
- She was sheltered from Giuseppe "Black" Gorgiano and the Red Circle while Gennaro Lucca worked to foil them (REDC 270).
- She later rushed to the signal flat, identified Gorgiano's body, and recounted the backstory (REDC 479).
