In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Gennaro Lucca was the husband of Emilia Lucca (REDC 477), and a former member of the Italian secret society Red Circle (REDC 539).
- He married Emilia Lucca, the daughter of his employer Augusto Barelli (REDC 509). When the father forbade the match, Emilia and Gennaro prompted their elopement to marry in Bari (south Italy) and fled to America, in New York (REDC 509). Four years later, they fled Giuseppe "Black" Gorgiano and the Red Circle and went to London (REDC 567).
- He hid Emilia in a safe flat managed by Mrs. Warren (REDC 493).
- He then stayed apart to work with U.S. and Italian police (REDC 576). He communicated with her via newspaper ads and light signals ("Attenta... Pericolo") (REDC 322). Their enemies tracked them but Gennaro killed Giuseppe Gorgiano in the Howe Street flat (REDC 493).
- However, Sherlock Holmes said that Gennaro would be probably arrested and tried for the murder (REDC 499).
