In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • He was known as "James Browner" on the boat "May Day" (CARD 356).
  • Mary's sister Sarah Cushing developed feelings for him, but when he rejected her, her affection turned into hatred. Sarah then poisoned Mary's mind against Browner (CARD 417).
  • When his wife Mary grew close to another sailor, Alec Fairbairn, Jim killed them both in a fit of jealous rage. He cut an ear from each body and sent them in a packet addressed to Sarah Cushing, but it was Susan Cushing who received and opened it (CARD 287).
