In the Sherlock Holmes stories
John Ferrier was a pioneer, farmer and Mormon who was murdered by Joseph Stangerson.
- John Ferrier and Lucy, that he adopted (STUD 1672), were the only survivors of 21 pioneers in the Great Alkali Plain (STUD 1611), rescued by the Mormons (STUD 1613), which he embraced the faith.
- Years later, Brigham Young told Lucy to choose a Mormon husband within a month, either Joseph Stangerson or Enoch J. Drebber. As the threats became more urgent, an escape was planned for the last day of the ultimatum. Unfortunately, the attempt failed. John Ferrier was killed (STUD 1891).
