In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Mr. Melas was a Greek by birth, living in London (GREE 122). He worked as a professional interpreter, especially for Greek. And also acted as a guide for wealthy foreign visitors (GREE 112).
- Mycroft Holmes brought him to the Diogenes Club to tell his tale (GREE 114).
- He was kidnapped by Harold Latimer who asked him to interpret for a Greek gentleman, Paul Kratides (GREE 120).
- When translating to Greek, Mr. Melas cleverly adds his own secret questions in Greek to draw out Paul Kratides's identity and situation (GREE 192).
- When Sherlock Holmes and Mycroft Holmes started the investigation, Wilson Kemp kidnaped him again and forced him to interpret a second time (GREE 416).
- He was left bound and locked with Paul Kratides in a charcoal-filled room with poisonous exhalation. Rescued barely in time by Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Mycroft Holmes, and Inspector Gregson (GREE 400).
