  • He went to Africa twenty-five years before the affair (SOLI 34).
  • Bob Carruthers and Jack Woodley, who were home on a visit from South Africa, said that Ralph Smith was a friend of theirs, and that he died some months before in great poverty in Johannesburg (SOLI 38), but it was false he died later on (SOLI 437).
