In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • William Kirwan was the Cunninghams' coachman (REIG 47). The man has been in his service for years, and was a good servant (REIG 58).
  • He lived at the Cunningham's lodge with his elderly, deaf mother (REIG 101).
  • Sherlock Holmes later discovered that he had witnessed the Cunninghams' earlier burglary at Mr. Acton's house and was blackmailing them. This blackmail attempt became the motive for his murder (REIG 442).
