Eastbourne v. Uppingham Rovers

The Sporting Life (9 august 1897, p. 3)

This two-days' match was brought to a conclusion at the Saffrons, Eastbourne, on Saturday, the result being a highly meritorious victory for the home team by eight wickets. The Rovers stood in a relatively better position until Eastbourne went in a second time and required 225 to win. To the great delight of the large crowd, they set about obtaining these in businesslike style, such success attending their efforts than in two hours they had hit off the runs. Rev. H. R. Browne played a magnificent not out innings of 143, hitting with marvellous power, and sending the ball to the boundary twenty-four times. H. J. Davenport also played well for 50 (not out), among his hits being eight 4's. In the second innings of the Rovers Conan Doyle captured five wickets for 24, and in their first innings R. T. Thornton took four for 32, and Wheeler five for 56. W. P. Whitwell and K. E. M. Barker each took four wickets in the first innings of Eastbourne, the former at a cost of 56 runs, and the latter of 40. The match was set apart by the Eastbourne Club as a benefit to Wheeler, their sensor ground bowler. Score:—
