M.C.C. and Ground v. London County

The Standard (London) (15 june 1901, p. 4)

At Lord's yesterday, London County secured a highly meritorious win over a good side of the M.C.C. by four wickets. When stumps were drawn on Thursday, Marylebone, with four wickets down in their second innings, were 88 runs to the good, but some more admirable bowling by W. G. Grace turned the scale in favour of London County, for whom W. Smith, the Oxfordshire amateur, subsequently played a fine not-out innings, and put the issue beyond all doubt. The overnight not-outs were Carpenter (40) and Rawlin (28), but the score was only raised from 103 to 120 before Rawlin was caught at the wicket. Carpenter was the next to leave for a finely-played 61, which contained ten fours, and had occupied him two hours and five minutes. Only Murrell of the remaining batsmen did anything worthy of special note, the Kent professional hitting up 34 in twenty minutes, three times getting Grace to the boundary in one over. The innings closed for 198, London County requiring 184 runs to win. Grace took six wickets for 80, and his record for the match was thirteen for 110. The visitors opened their final venture none too well, four wickets going down for 69, Fry scoring 37 out of 57 put on during his stay. For the fifth wicket W. Smith and Goldie made a valuable stand, adding 103 in an hour before the Sussex player was caught in the long field for a freely hit 45. Keigwin ran himself out, and failed to score in either innings, but with Vine in the winning hit was made at a quarter past four, Marylebone sustaining defeat by four wickets. W. Smith carried out his bat for an admirable 61, which did not contain a chance. He was batting for an hour and forty minutes, and played particularly well on the leg side. Score:—
