Sussex Martlets v. Old Eastbournians

Brighton Gazette (20 july 1912, p. 2)

The Old Eastbournians who visited the County Ground, Hove, on Thursday afternoon, lost to the Sussex Martlets by 50 runs. The Martlets batted first, and held the debatable ground for close upon three hours, sending up a score of 302. Very attractive displays were given by R. D. Cochrane, F. G. Daubeney, and G. R. Murray. The first-mentioned contributed a capital, though not faultless, 74, batting for fifty-five minutes, and claiming one six, a five, and eight fours. Daubeney was batting an hour and a quarter for 73, a very nice innings, including a five and ten fours. Murray registered nine fours in his 60. R. H. King took five wickets for 93. The Old Eastbournians did not open in promising form. The sixth wicket fell at 103, but the stand for the seventh wicket by King and Captain Whatford brought the score to 212, and promised an interesting finish. Captain Whatford's batting was attractive and brisk. In an hour he made 69, hitting two fives and ten fours. The batsmen hit out boldly, but a quarter of an hour before the close the total stood at 252 for 9. The light was failing. Seven minutes before time the last wicket fell without any alteration in the total, the Martlets winning by 50 runs. Score:—
