The Irish Oath
TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.
Sir, — It seems to me that the tension in Ireland on the subject of the Oath would be relieved if we could bring home the fact that this declaration of allegiance to the Crown does not concern England alone, but that it is an affirmation of comradeship with Australia, Canada, South Africa, and all those other scattered units of Empire where Irishmen have settled. Without the Oath Ireland would be quite isolated and an Irishman would find himself a foreigner in all the great Colonies. There is a sentimental argument there, but it may also be a very practical one when the question of Imperial preference comes more to the front.
Yours faithfully,
ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE.
