United Services v. Crystal Palace

The Evening News (Portsmouth) (25 august 1890, p. 3)

The two days' match between these teams concluded on Saturday, at the U.S.C.C. Ground, Portsmouth, the weather in the afternoon being magnificent and the spectators being well entertained by good music furnished by the band of the York Regiment. The overnight score on Friday by the Crystal Palace was 375 for nine wickets, and on Saturday morning, declaring their innings closed, the U.S. started the day's play with the batting of Major Bethune and Dr. Conan Doyle, at whose separation the "telegraph" stood at 27. The second batsman was out two runs later, but the score gradually rose to 150, no fewer than nine of the team being caught. In the follow-on the Services had made 45 before Captain Wyld and Miall were parted, the former being given out "leg before." The second and third wickets fell for 69. Doyle and Brougham now made a stand, and at half-past five they had brought the main total to within a hundred of the heavy score of the Palace men. A quarter of an hour later Doyle was sent back to the pavilion from a creditable catch by Currey off Campbell — 4 for 137. The fifth wicket fell for 158, and the match closed in a draw as follows:—
