In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Mortimer Tregennis killed his sister and attempted to kill his two brothers (who ended in an asylum) for money and control of the family's property (DEVI 528), by burning some poisonous devil's-foot root powder (DEVI 331).
- He was from a former tin-miner family from Redruth (DEVI 93). He had two brothers : George Tregennis and Owen Tregennis, and a sister Brenda Tregennis (DEVI 44).
- He was a lodger at the vicarage of Mr. Roundhay. He was a thin, dark, spectacled man, with a stoop which gave the impression of actual, physical deformity (DEVI 31).
- He was killed the next night by Dr. Leon Sterndale using the same poison, as a revenge for the murder of Brenda (DEVI 31).
