In the Sherlock Holmes stories
The Worthingdon Bank Gang was a group of five men involved in Worthingdon Bank robbery in 1875 (RESI 380) :
During the Worthingdon Bank robbery, they murdered the bank caretaker, Tobin (RESI 382), and they escaped with £7,000 (RESI 381).
Arrest and Punishment
All five were arrested, but evidence was weak. Sutton (Blessington) betrayed the others by turning informer (RESI 383) :
- Cartwright was hanged.
- Biddle, Hayward, and Moffat got 15 years in prison.
- Sutton (Blessington) escaped punishment by testifying.
Revenge
When the three surviving men were released (before serving the full term), they hunted down Sutton (Blessington) to take revenge for his betrayal, and hanged him (RESI 308).
