The Arthur Conan Doyle Society (1989-2003)

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia
The Arthur Conan Doyle Society logo.

The Arthur Conan Doyle Society was an organization of Arthur Conan Doyle enthusiasts founded on sunday 21 may 1989 (the day before Sir Arthur's 130th birthday) by Christopher Roden.

The society had the following aims:

  • To bring together those people sharing a common interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his works, and to encourage new work and investigation.
  • To make the results of discussion and research available through the medium of the Society's Journal.
  • To promote Sir Arthur's works to a wider audience — perhaps by encouraging radio/television adaptation of some of the lesser known works and short stories. And, in particular, by encouraging publishers to make Sir Arthur's books more readily available in modern editions.
  • To present a social side to the Society. Organised visits to places of relevance in a discussion of Conan Doyle, and meetings with lectures and discussion on specialised topics.

The society unofficially ceased activities around 2003.

A.C.D. - The Journal of The Arthur Conan Doyle Society

The Journal brought together scholarship and research on Conan Doyle's life and works, and features articles by scholars and enthusiasts from around the world, which look at all aspects of ACD's writings, from his short stories and historical writings, through to his non-fiction works on war and Spiritualism. The Journal also published a number of articles about Sherlock Holmes and his adventures — though the Society didn't play the Sherlockian 'Game' of pretending that the detective was a real person, with ACD merely the 'Literary Agent'.
